mandibular advancement device

A device composed of wire and plastic that is inserted in the mouth of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea before going to sleep at night. The device moves the mandible forward 4–6 mm and is said to improve sleep quality and reduce sleep apnoea, which is associated with hypertension, CAD and nocturnal angina.

mandibular advancement splint

A device to maintain an open airway in patients who suffer partial upper airway collapse during sleep. The splint is placed in the mouth at bedtime. See also: splint
