Neomycins

a class of antibiotics that is produced by the actinomycete Streptomyces fradiae. Neomycins were first isolated in 1949 by Z. Waxman and his co-workers. Neomycins are aminoglycosides.

Active against many species of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, neomycins have a bactericidal effect that is based on the suppression of protein synthesis and the disruption of the genetic coding process. In view of their adverse side effects on the auditory organs and the kidneys, neomycins are mainly used topically and orally in treating infections induced by staphylococci and coliform bacteria.
