Neomycin is mainly used topically in the treatment of skin and mucous membrane infections, wounds, and burns. Although it is also used systemically, it is highly toxic. Neomycin was first isolated in 1949 by the American microbiologist Selman Waksman from a strain of the bacterial species Streptomyces fradiae.

An aminoglycoside antibiotic drug derived from a strain of Streptomyces fradiae . Neomycin can be given by mouth to destroy organisms in the bowel or can be used in solution to irrigate the bladder. It is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It is much too toxic to be given by injection and can have seriously damaging effects on hearing and on the kidneys. The drug is widely used as a surface application in ointments with other ingredients such as steroids. A brand name is Nivemycin. Preparations of neomycin with a corticosteroid, for external use, include Audicort, Betnovate-N, Dermovate-NN, Maxitrol, Neo-Cortef, Synalar-N, Tri-Adcortyl and Vistamethasone N. The drug is also formulated with the antibiotics polymyxin and gramicidin and with the antifungal drug nystatin.
