lopolith[′läp·ə‚lith] (geology) A large, floored intrusive body that is sunken centrally into the shape of a basin due to sagging of the underlying country rock. Lopolith a type of occurrence of magmatic rock in the form of a smooth basin with a depressed central area and raised rims. It is believed that lopoliths are formed when magma which has intruded into the earth’s crust draws close to the earth’s surface and the sedimentary rock underlying the lopolith sinks in the area of the magma chamber. |
