Kisalföld

Kisalföld

(Little Alföld), part of the Middle Danubian Plain in northwestern Hungary, between the Danube, the Bakony Mountains, and the eastern spurs of the Alps.

The Kisalföld lies on the site of a tectonic trough filled up with a thick layer of loose deposits and modern alluvium from the Danube and Raba rivers. Its elevation ranges from 100 m to 150 m. In the north it is a flat plain with broad valleys, within which the Danube splits into branches and channels. The southern part is a hilly plain with individual outliers composed of basalts. The climate is temperate, with an annual precipitation of about 600 mm. A large part of the Kisalfold is cultivated; there are plantings of wheat and sugar beets. The broad-leaved forests have survived only in the southwest.
