Kiryu

(kĭryo͞o`), city (1990 pop. 126,446), Gumma prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. A major center of silk production since the 8th cent., it now manufactures rayon as well.

a city in Japan, in the central part of Honshu Island, on the Watarase River, in Gumma Prefecture. Population, 133,-000 (1970). Railroad junction. It is one of Japan’s oldest and largest centers for the production of silk products. There is food-processing industry. Kiryu also has a plant for the manufacture of automatic scales and other commercial equipment.
