Kiryu

(kĭryo͞o`), city (1990 pop. 126,446), Gumma prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. A major center of silk production since the 8th cent., it now manufactures rayon as well.

It is one of Japan’s oldest and largest centers for the production of silk products. There is food-processing industry. Kiryu also has a plant for the manufacture of automatic scales and other commercial equipment.
