Nootists
Nootists
the conservative party in Belgium from 1787 to 1790. Named after its leader, H. van der Noot, it represented the interests of the landed nobility, the Catholic Church, and the guild corporations. During the anti-Austrian Brabant Revolution of 1789–90 its members, unlike the Vonckists, came out against bourgeois constitutional reforms. The Nootists took power in January 1790 and routed the Vonckists in March of the same year. This aided Austria’s suppression of the revolution in December 1790.
