Mandara
Mandara (self-designation, Wandala), a group of tribes (Matakam, Daba, Mandara, Gamergu, Gidar) inhabiting the Mandara Mountains, the environs of Mora and Maroua in Cameroon, and the bordering regions in Nigeria. Total population, approximately 500,000 (1967, estimate). The little known Mandara languages are related to the Hausa group. Most of the Mandara are Muslims. Their chief occupations are terrace farming (millet, peanuts) in the mountains and farming (millet, rice, maize) and livestock raising on the plains. Handicrafts are well developed.
