Kirkwood, Samuel Jordon

(1813–94) governor, cabinet member; born in Harford County, Md. A lawyer and flour mill owner, he served as Iowa's governor (Rep., 1859–63), using his own money to equip the Iowa Union volunteers, and quashing proslavery "Copperheads" with homeguard troops. A two-time U.S. senator (1866–67, 1877–81), he was briefly governor between terms (1876–77) and Garfield's secretary of the interior afterward (1881–82).
