Lega, Silvestro
Lega, Silvestro
Born Dec. 8, 1826, in Modigliana, Emilia; died Sept. 21, 1895, in Florence. Italian painter.
Lega studied at the Art Academy in Florence from 1848 to 1852. He took part in the Revolution of 1848—49. In about 1860 he joined the Macchiatoli group. He painted mainly genre pictures in harmonious and delicate colors, representing with poetic gentleness the life in Italian provincial towns (The Visit, 1868, National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome). The manner of painting is more energetic in Lega’s portraits (Don Giovanni Verità, 1885, in the municipality in Modigliana).
