It is an important mining center for coal, sulfur, and cinnabar and has iron and steel plants.Mieres a city in northern Spain in Asturias, Oviedo Province. Population, 64, 600 (1970). It is one of the centers of the Asturian coal basin. Until 1970, Mieres had a metallurgical works. Chemical and food-processing industries are located in the city.
