Michałowicz, Mieczystaw Jan

 

Born Aug. 29, 1876, in St. Petersburg; died Nov. 22, 1965, in Warsaw. Polish pediatrician and state and public figure. Corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Medical Sciences (1947) and member of the Polish Academy of Learning (1947–51) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (1957). Member of the Polish Socialist Party from 1896.

In 1901, Michatowicz graduated from the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. From 1920 he was a professor and the head of the children’s clinic at the University of Warsaw, serving as the university’s rector in 1930–31. From 1935 to 1938 he was a senator. His principal works dealt with children’s infections and tuberculosis. During the fascist occupation he was imprisoned in the Pawiak jail in Warsaw and later in the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. He was a deputy to the Krajowa Rada Narodowa in 1945–46 and to the Sejm from 1947 to 1952. In 1945 he was appointed chairman of the Slavic Committee, becoming its-honorary chairman in 1947. From 1948 he was a member of the Central Committee to Study Fascist German Crimes. He received an honorary doctorate from the Krakow Medical Academy and was an honorary member of many foreign pediatric societies. Michalowicz was the coauthor of a three-volume textbook on pediatrics (1937–39).
