Architecture from the18th and 19th centuries endures today, highlighting the canalculture era that changed this region. Today, bikers and hikers can travel the byway's canal-side paths where mules and horses once towed barges.
Legth: 28 miles. Start/Endpoint: Paralleling the Mohawk River, byway begins at the intersection of NY 4 and NY 32 in Waterford, passes through Cohoes and Crescent, and ends at the intersection of State Streetand NY 5 in Schenectady. An alternate loop route from NY 9 in Crescent returns to Waterford, joining the main designation at the intersection of NY 32. Time to Allow: 40 minutes. Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (2005).
