Appalachian orogeny

[¦ap·ə¦lā·chən ȯ′räj·ə·nē] (geology) An obsolete term referring to Late Paleozoic diastrophism beginning perhaps in the Late Devonian and continuing until the end of the Permian; now replaced by Alleghenian orogeny.
