Longus was the author of a pastoral romance called Daphnis and Chloe, in which the heroes and the surrounding humble world of rustics and slaves were idealized. The work’s stylistic uniqueness lay in its juxtaposition of the naive feelings of the lovers with sophisticated descriptions of love and nature.
