Leeuwenhoek [la´ven-ho̳k] Anton (or Anthony) van (1632–1723). Dutch microscopist. Born in Delft, Holland, he made many interesting discoveries through his careful observations even though his work was not conducted on a definite scientific plan. He gave the first accurate description of the red blood cells in 1674, and in 1677 he described and illustrated the spermatozoa in animals.
