Chartered in 1435, Leeuwarden was (16th–18th cent.) the center of a goldworking and silverworking industry. Many structures date from the 16th and 17th cent., notably the huge brick Oldehove Tower. The large Frisian Museum is there.Leeuwardena city in the Netherlands; administrative center of the province of Friesland. Population, 88,700 (1970). It is a meeting point for canals and railroads and has food-processing (primarily dairy) industry and metalworking enterprises. A technological economics institute is located in the city.
