Ostromir

(Christian name, Iosif). Novgorod voevoda (military governor) and posadnik (highest official) from 1054 to 1057. Commissioned the oldest extant Russian gospel, known as the Ostromir Gospel.

Ostromir was the father-in-law of the Kievan grand prince Iziaslav Iaroslavich. In 1056 he launched a campaign against the Chud’, capturing one of their cities. Ostromir’s son was the voevoda Vyshata, and his grandson was Ian Vyshatich, who was active in the political life of Rus’.
