Kinburn
Kinburn
a former fortress on the Kinburn Kosa (in present-day Ochakov Raion, Nikolaev Oblast). It was built by the Turks in the 15th century and became part of Russia in 1774. On Oct. 1 (12), 1787, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–91, the Turkish fleet landed 5,000 troops on the Kinburn Kosa after bombarding it. Using artillery fire, the Russian forces under the command of A. V. Suvorov forced the Turkish ships to sail; then, after stubborn fighting, the Russians pushed the landing party into the sea. The Turks lost 4,500 men, while the Russians lost about 450. The fortress was dismantled in 1857.
