Modlona Pile Settlement

Modlona Pile Settlement

a Neolithic settlement of the second half of the third millennium B.C. on the Modlona River, in what is now Kirillov Raion, Vologda Oblast, RSFSR. It was discovered by A. la. Briussov and was subsequently studied by him from 1938 to 1940 and from 1945 to 1957 and by S. V. Oshibkina in 1970.

The remains of four houses set on piles and of small connecting bridges were found, as well as stone and bone implements, ceramic and wooden household vessels with carved and sculptured decoration, and pendants made of amber, shale, and bone. The Modlona pile settlement was not typical of the Neolithic cultures of the northern part of the European USSR. Similar settlements were common south of Vologda, mainly in eastern Latvia, in the second half of the third millennium B.C. They have also been found in Pskov Oblast and on the Upper Volga.
