A sugar alcohol (polyol) used as an artificial sweetener, which has nearly the same physical properties as table sugar but contains fewer calories, does not cause tooth decay, and does not trigger an abrupt release of insulin.
Adverse effects
In excess, maltitol can have a laxative effect.
