, region, Marne and Seine-et-Marne depts., N France, E of Paris. Rich in wheat and cattle, it is famous for Brie cheese. The smaller section of the region (Brie française) forms part of the Île-de-France and is very fertile.

An episcopal see since the 4th cent., Meaux has a cathedral (13th–14th cent.) that contains the tomb of Bossuet, the city's most famous bishop. In the massacre of Meaux (1358), thousands of peasants who had participated in the JacquerieJacquerie
[Fr.,=collection of Jacques, which is, like Jacques Bonhomme, a nickname for the French peasant], 1358, revolt of the French peasantry. The uprising was in part a reaction to widespread poverty during the Hundred Years War.
