Lebedinskii, Vladimir

Born July 8 (20), 1868, in Petrozavodsk; died July 11, 1937, in Leningrad. Soviet scientist in physics and radio engineering. After graduating from the department of physics and mathematics of the University of St. Petersburg in 1891, he taught in a number of higher educational institutions (he became a professor in 1913). He was one of the organizers of the Nizhny Novgorod Radio Laboratory, where research on shortwaves was begun on his initiative (1924).

Lebedinskii’s work was devoted to electromagnetic oscillations and waves, spark discharge, and magnetic phenomena. His books Electromagnetic Waves and the Principles of Wireless Telegraphy (1906), Electricity and Magnetism (1909), and Discussion of Electricity (1940) played an important role in the popularization of scientific knowledge and the teaching of physics. He edited the physics section of Zhurnal Russkogo fizikokhimicheskogo obshchestva (Journal of the Russian Physical Chemistry Society; 1906–10) and Voprosy fiziki (Problems of Physics; 1907–10) and took the initiative in organizing the journals Telegrafiia i telefoniia bez provodov (Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony; 1918–28) and Radiotekhnik (Radio Engineer; 1918–21).
