Lebedinskii, Andrei Vladimirovich

Born Apr. 29 (May 12), 1902, in St. Petersburg; died Jan. 3, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet physiologist and biophysicist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1958). Major general in the Medical Service. Member of the CPSU from 1957.

In 1924, Lebedinskii graduated from the Military Medical Academy. He was a student of L. A. Orbeli. From 1936 he was deputy head and later head of the subdepartment of physiology at the Military Medical Academy. From 1954 to 1963 he headed the Institute of Biophysics of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. From 1963 he was director of the Institute of Medical Biological Problems of the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR. His works were on the physiology of the sense organs (chiefly vision), radiobiology, the effects of various types of ionizing radiation and ultrahigh frequency on the body, and space biology and medicine. He studied the mechanisms of origin of bioelectric potential in the body. From 1955 to 1958 he was a representative of the USSR to the United Nations on problems of radiobiology. Lebedinskii was awarded two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
