Lebedev, Petr Ivanovich

Born Aug. 11 (23), 1885, in Piriatin, in present-day Poltava Oblast; died May 3, 1948, in Moscow. Soviet geologist and petrologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939).

Lebedev graduated from St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute in 1909 and from St. Petersburg University in 1912. Beginning in 1915 he served as a professor at a number of higher educational institutions. His basic works dealt with mineralogy, geochemistry, descriptive, theoretical, and experimental petrology, and the theory of minerals. He made experimental studies of mineral formation in certain silicate systems and of the behavior of sulfides when alloyed with silicates; from this he drew conclusions about the conditions of formation of sulfide ore deposits. Lebedev’s petrologic research in the Kuznetsk Alatau and Far East played a significant role in expanding the ore base in the eastern part of the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
