out-of-band

out-of-band

(communications)The exchange of call control informationon a dedicated channel, separate from that used by thetelephone call or data transmission.

out-of-band

(2)Sometimes used to describe what communications people call"shift characters", such as the ESC that leads controlsequences for many terminals, or the level shift indicators inthe old 5-bit Baudot codes.

out-of-band

(3)In personal communication, using methods other thanelectronic mail, such as telephone or snail-mail.

out-of-band

(software)Values returned by a function that are not inits "natural" range of return values, but rather signal somekind of exception. Many C functions that normally returna non-negative integer return -1 to indicate failure.

This use confuses "out-of-band" with "out-of-range". It isactually a clear example of in-band signalling since it usesthe same "channel" for control and data.

Compare hidden flag, green bytes, fence.

out-of-band

(1) Separate from the primary frequency or system. See signaling in/out-of-band and out-of-band data.

(2) Not at the regular time. See out-of-band patch.
