below-the-knee amputation

below-the-knee amputation

An elective procedure, often required for peripheral vascular disease. While BKAs are preferred by the patient—whose sense of loss is less—they often require re-amputation and the prosthesis is less stable than an above-the-knee amputation. The 5-year mortality of BKA is 11.6%, compared to 21.4% for AKA.
