On the southeastern border of NE, southeast of Lincoln; original county; organized Mar 2, 1855 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Indian tribe of Siouan linguistic stock; meaning uncertain, but said to be 'lechers,' either as 'lovers' or in the pejorative sense. The name seems to be a shortened version of a Siouan or possibly French name
