longeron[′lan·jə‚rän] (aerospace engineering) A principal longitudinal member of the structural framework of a fuselage, nacelle, or empennage boom. Longeron a major load-bearing element of many engineering structures, such as aircraft, automobiles, bridges, and ships. Longerons run lengthwise in a structure; together with stringers, they form the longitudinal frame for the wings, fuselage, empennage, control surfaces, and ailerons in an aircraft. In automobiles and railroad cars, two longerons connected by transverse members form the frame (chassis) that supports the body, wheels, and engine. Longerons may be made of H-shaped, channeled, boxlike, or irregular sections or sheets of metal. longeron The principal longitudinal members of the fuselage, which run from the front to the rear and are usually supported at various points along the length by other structural members.
