Kidd, (William) Captain

(?1645–1701) pirate; born in Greenock, Scotland. He established himself as a sea captain in New York (1690) and was commissioned by the English government to fight pirates off Madagascar (1695). He turned to piracy around 1697 and was taken prisoner while ashore in Boston (1699). He was hanged in London.
