Canloan, a volcano, rises to c.8,088 ft/2,465 m), Negros has extensive arable lowlands; they are intensively cultivated and densely populated. Negros is the sugar center of the Philippines. Two thirds of the nation's sugarcane is grown there, and sugar processing is a major industry; paper products are made from sugarcane residue. Rice, coconuts, bananas, and corn are also grown. The island is primarily mountainous, with a maximum elevation of 2,460 m (the Canlaon volcano). The fertile plains of the west and northwest are composed mostly of volcanic soils. The island has a subequatorial monsoonal climate. Evergreen tropical forests grow in the mountains and savannas on the plains. Sugarcane is the chief agricultural product; rice and corn are also grown. Lumber is exported, and there are deposits of copper (Sipolay) and sulfur.
