Size: 9,000 acres.
Established: Authorized on October 31, 1988. The national park is entirely on lands leased from the ten Samoan villages, which are the true landowners; a 50-year lease was signed on September 9, 1993.
Location:In American Samoa, 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. Park lands are on three separate islands: Tutuila, Ofu and Tau. There are scheduled flights from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Pago Pago on Tutuila. Regularly scheduled flights serve park areas on Ofu and Tau.
Facilities:Visitor center (in Pago Pago), lodging. Because the national park lies entirely on lands still owned by severalrural Samoan villages, traditional cultures have an impact on all aspects of thispark's operations and visitor opportunities.
Activities:Hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, auto touring, wildlife viewing, guided tours. Overnight stays in Samoan villages are encouraged.
Special Features:Two rain forest preserves and a coral reef are home to unique tropical animals including the flying fox, Pacific Boa, tortoises, and an array of birds and fish.
