The discovery of a huge oil field at nearby Lake Samotlor in 1965 quickly transformed the small village of Nizhnevartovsk into an oil and gas center. a city (a settlement until 1972) under okrug jurisdiction, administrative center of Nizhnevartovsk Raion, Khanty-Mansi National Okrug, Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. A port on the right bank of the Ob’ River. Population, 35,000 (1973). Nizhnevartovsk arose after the discovery and development of the nearby Samotlor oil fields. The Samotlor-Al’met’evsk oil pipeline was constructed there; the Aleksan-drovskoe-Nizhnevartovsk-Ust’-Balyk-Omsk oil pipeline also runs through the city.
