Khorog

a city (since 1932) and administrative center of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, Tadzhik SSR. Population, 14,000 (1974). Khorog is located in the southwestern Pamirs, at an elevation of 2,200 m, near the point where the Gunt River empties into the Piandzh. It is connected by highways with the cities of Dushanbe and Osh. Khorog has an airport. Industry includes meat and dairy products, reinforced-concrete structures. and clothing. Khorog has a medical school, a musical comedy theater, and a museum of local lore. The Pamir Biological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Tadzhik SSR is also located there.
