Kholmsk Seaport

a commercial port on the southwestern coast of the island of Sakhalin, on the Tatar Strait of the Sea of Japan, on Nevel’skoi Gulf. Kholmsk Seaport is a base of the Sakhalin Ocean Steamship Line. Construction of the port began in 1909, and the main structures were built between 1935 and 1938.

The harbor is protected by two jetties. The port has mooring, cargo-storage, and industrial facilities and is equipped with selfpropelled electric portal cranes with lifting capacities of up to 41 tons. Special structures were installed in 1973 to receive ferryboats operating between Kholmsk and Vanino. In 1975 the ferries, which transport railroad cars, delivered more than 1.2 million tons of cargo. Because the gauge of the railroad tracks on Sakhalin differs from that of the tracks on the continent, special facilities have been built in the port to reset wheel pairs.

Kholmsk Seaport also handles dry-cargo freighters. Many ships stop at the port to take on equipment, materials, provisions, and water. In 1975 approximately 700 Soviet and foreign ships moored at the port. Kholmsk Seaport has a passenger terminal.
