Lomonosov Current

Lomonosov Current

subsurface equatorial current in the Atlantic Ocean. It moves eastward along the equator (under the west-flowing South Equatorial Current), at depths of 50-200 m. The current achieves a maximum speed of 120 cm per sec at depths of 80-100 m. Its force decreases south and north of the equator. The current is an important link in the overall system of water circulation in the equatorial latitudes of the Atlantic. It was discovered in 1959 by a Soviet expedition on the ship M. Lomonosov.
