Khirgis-Nur

an undrained salt lake in the Khirgis basin in the northwestern Mongolian People’s Republic (the middle part of the Great Lakes Depression). Situated at an elevation of 1,028 m, the lake has an area of 1,360 sq km and depths to 80 m. It is the last body of water in the Khara-Us-Nur, Durgen-Nur, Khara-Nur, and Airag-Nur lake system, which receives the water of the Kobdo and Dzabkhin rivers. Khirgis-Nur is connected by channels with Airag-Nur. Its salinity is about 7.5 grams per liter. The lake is frozen from November until April. Its shores are low and desert-like, with meadows in some places. The height of the terraces reaches 100 m. The lake abounds in fish (Diptychus and others).
