Khirgis Depression
Khirgis Depression
a depression formed by erosion and deformation of the surface in the northwestern Mongolian People’s Republic, the middle part of the Great Lakes Depression between the Khan-Khukhiin-Ula Range in the north, the spurs of the Khangai in the east, and the Mongolian Altai in the south and west. Its elevation ranges from 1,028 m (the level of the lake Khirgis-Nur) in the center to 1,500 m along the outer regions. The basin has melkosopochnik areas, individual hills, and ridges with elevations to 1,551 m, as well as sandy massifs. Xerophytic shrubs and saltworts predominate in the vegetation. The region is used for transhumance.
