单词 model t
释义

Model T

Model T

An inexpensive and easy to maintain automobile introduced by Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Co. in 1908. The first Ford Motor Co. automobile, however, was a Model A, introduced in 1903. It had a two-cylinder, eighthorsepower engine, wooden wheels, a two forward speed transmission and was not the Model A introduced as a successor to the Model T. Between the original Model A and the Model T there were the Models B, C, F, K, N, R, and S. The Model T still had wooden wheels, but a substantial four-cylinder engine, a separate coil for each cylinder spark plug, and no electric starter. It also had electric lights powered by a magneto. Ford pioneered the use of high-strength alloy steel, and cast-off Model T rear axles were much favored as a source of steel for farm repair work. Even though the engine was substantially more powerful than that on previous models, it was still sometimes necessary to back up hills, since reverse had a lower gear ratio than the forward low gear. Another reason sometimes cited for backing up hills was that if the gas tank was low on fuel, going uphill in a forward direction would tilt the tank so much that fuel would not feed to the carburetor.
