Kharlamov, Nikolai Mikhailovich
Born Dec. 6 (19), 1905, in the city of Zhukovka, in what is now Briansk Oblast. Soviet admiral (1949). Member of the CPSU since 1925.
Kharlamov joined the navy in 1922. He graduated from the M. V. Frunze Naval School in 1928, completed advanced training courses for higher command personnel at the Naval Academy in 1941, and graduated from the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy in 1956.
Kharlamov served in the Black Sea Fleet as a destroyer commander, a cruiser commander, and, from 1938 to 1941, fleet chief of staff. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, he was a directorate chief in the central headquarters of the Soviet Navy. He became acting head of the Soviet military mission in Great Britain in August 1941 and head of the mission in 1943. In November 1944 he became a directorate chief and then deputy chief of the Main Naval Staff.
After the war, Kharlamov served as deputy chief for the navy on the General Staff of the Armed Forces from 1946 to 1950, commander of the Eighth Fleet in the Baltic from 1950 to 1954, and commander of the Baltic Fleet from 1956 to 1959. From 1961 to 1971 he performed vital duties in the central headquarters of the Soviet Navy. Kharlamov retired in August 1971.
Kharlamov has served as a deputy to the fourth and fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Orders of Ushakov First Class and Nakhimov First Class, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Red Star, and various medals.
