Khara-Us-Nur

a lake in the western part of the Mongolian People’s Republic, in the Great Lakes Depression. Khara-Us-Nur covers an area of 1,486 sq km, and has a maximum depth of 4.5 m. It is situated at an elevation of 1,157 m. The lake is divided into two bodies of water by Ak-Bashi Island (area, 274 sq km). The Kobdo River empties into the lake. Khara-Us-Nur is linked by a channel with the lake Khara-Nur. Its banks are low and swampy in places. In winter the lake freezes. Khara-Us-Nur abounds in fish and has many waterfowl species; the muskrat has become acclimatized to the environment.
