Khanka
(Hsingk’ai Hu), a lake in the southeastern part of Primor’e Krai, RSFSR, and in China. Lake Khanka covers an area of 4,190 sq km, of which 3,030 sq km are in the USSR, and measures 95 km in length. Depths of 1–3 m predominate, and the maximum depth is 10.6 m. The dimensions of Lake Khanka change significantly depending on the water level. The lake is located in the Khanka Lowland at an elevation of 68 m.
Lake Khanka is separated from Lake Maloe Khanka by alluvial deposits. The banks are swampy except for those to the northwest. The lake is fed primarily by rain. The mean flow rate into the lake is 1.99 cu km per year, and from the lake, 1.70 cu km per year. High water levels occur in autumn, and surge is frequent. The lake freezes in the second half of November, and the ice breaks up in April. The Lefu, Mo, and Sintukha rivers flow into the lake, and the Sungacha, a tributary of the Ussuri River of the Amur basin, flows from it. The lake is navigable. There is fishing for kaluga and carp and hunting for muskrat. Waterfowl nest along the shores.
