Niuia

a river in the Yakut ASSR, a left tributary of the Lena. The Niuia is 798 km long and drains an area of 38,100 sq km. It flows nearly parallel to the Lena across the Lena River plateau, and in its middle and lower course, it meanders greatly. It is fed mainly by snow. High water occurs in May and June; from July to October, there are flash floods. The mean flow rate 132 km from the mouth is 115 cu m per sec. The Niuia freezes in the second half of October, and the ice breaks up in May. The river’s major left tributaries are the Tympychan, Khamaky, Ulakhan-Murbaiy, Ochchugui-Murbaiy, and Betinche. The Niuia is used for floating timber.
