the largest art museum in Sweden; it was founded in 1792.

The National Museum in Stockholm has an extensive collection of European paintings, miniatures, sculpture, and drawings, as well as masterpieces of Greco-Roman and Oriental art. The museum houses works by Rembrandt (The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis), El Greco, J. Jordaens, J. B. Chardin, F. Goya, A. Renoir, and P. Cézanne. There are also paintings by Swedish (C. G. Pilo, A. Roslin, A. Zorn, B. Liljefors, E. Josephson) and other Scandinavian artists. The museum has a collection of Russian icons and paintings. The Modern Museum, a branch of the National Museum, was founded in 1958; its collection consists of works by 20th-century European, mainly Swedish, artists. Also under the administration of the National Museum are the art treasures of the royal palaces.
