Kaushutov

ATA. Born July 15, 1903, in the village of Bezmein, now the city of Bezmein, Ashkhabad Raion; died Nov. 15, 1953, in Ashkhabad. Soviet Turkmen writer.

Kaushutov was one of the founders of Turkmen prose and dramaturgy. He was first published in 1925. He studied at the Communist University of the Working Peoples of the East in Moscow. He began his literary activity as a poet and playwright. His drama Dzhuma (1939) and the novellas The Last Master Sergeant (1951) and Turkmen Steeds (1951) represented important contributions to Soviet Turkmen literature. In the novel Mekhri and Vepa (1946) he wrote about events of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. His novel At the Foot of the Kopet Dagh (1947–9) deals with the struggle between the new and the old in a Turkmen aul (village). Kaushutov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
