Kansas RiverKansas Rivera river in the USA, a right tributary of the Missouri. The Kansas River is formed by the confluence of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers, which originate on the foothill plateaus of the Rocky Mountains. Length, 500 km (approximately 1,000 km including the Smoky Hill River); basin area, 158, 800 sq km (including extensive undrained regions). The Kansas flows through the High Plains and Central Plains plateaus. High water occurs in spring, with low water in summer; high floods caused by rain occur throughout the year. The average annual flow is 184 cu m per sec, with a maximum of 14, 000 cu m per sec and a minimum of 4. 5 cu m per sec. The river is used for irrigation.
