Kalakshetra Arts Festival

Kalakshetra Arts Festival

December-JanuaryThe Kalakshetra Foundation, in Tiruvanmiyur in the Tamil Nadu state capital of Chennai, is one of India's most outstanding cultural institutions. It was founded in 1936 and directed for many years by Rukmini Devi Arundale, an Indian woman who married an Englishman and devoted herself to the rejuvenation of Indian dance, music, sculpture, and crafts. Rukmini Devi is also known for choreographing 25 dance-dramas, a traditional Indian art form.
The Kalakshetra Arts Festival, which has been held annually for eight days in December-January since 1951, takes place at the Foundation's College of Fine Arts, a school that specializes in teaching the Bharatanatyam and other traditional styles of Indian dance. There are folk dance performances, vocal and instrumental recitals, and of course the famous dance-dramas choreographed by Rukmini Devi and based on themes from puranas, or Hindu epics.
