Kalahari Gemsbok National Park

national park in the Republic of South Africa. It is located in the Kalahari Desert, in the northern part of Cape of Good Hope Province. Founded in 1931. Area, about 900,000 hectares (1970). The typical landscape is barchans; vegetation consists mostly of thorny shrubs. Antelopes inhabiting the park include the gems-bok (Oryx gazella), springbok, common eland, and red harte-beest. Artificial watering places have been built to preserve the animals. There are two tourist camps in the park, at Twee Ri-vieren and Mata Mata.
