Kakhovka
a city (since 1938) in Kherson Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, on the left shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir, 10 km from the Kakhovka station on the Snigirevka-Fedorovka railroad line. Population 35, 000 (1971). Kakhovka was founded in 1783 on the basis of a small settlement. It was a major landing stage on the Dnieper River in the former Tauride Province until 1917.
During the Civil War of 1918–20, the offensive by Wrangel’s troops was halted near Kakhovka in August and October 1920. The TraktorodetaF Works, which makes tractor components, was built in Kakhovka as part of the prewar five-year plans. During the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), Kakhovka suffered greatly under the fascist German troops, who occupied it in early September 1941. An underground party group led by K. I. Turos operated in the city during the occupation. The Soviet Army liberated Kakhovka on Nov. 2, 1943. The city was completely rebuilt in the postwar period. The city has a repair plant, as well as factories producing reinforced-concrete articles and electric-welding equipment. There is also a museum of the history of the city.
