Karlsen, Genrikh Georgievich

Born Apr 25 (May 7), 1894, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in engineering structures, doctor of technical sciences (1938), Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1960.

Karlsen graduated from the Moscow Higher Technical School in 1922. He has been a professor since 1932 at a number of higher educational institutions and at the V. V. Kuibyshev Academy of Military Engineering. He is the founder of a scientific research laboratory for wooden structures at the State Institute of Construction (1928; now the Central Scientific Research Institute of Engineering Structures). He is the author of the first standards in the USSR for the design of wooden structures (1929). He has carried out studies on glued wooden structures. His principal works have dealt with problems of the effective use of wood in construction and the theoretical calculation and design of wooden structures. Karlsen has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1951), the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and several medals.
